Direct EU funding comes from European programmes such as Horizon Europe or the Connecting Europe Facility; it is often competitive and geared towards cross-border projects or those of significance to European policy. National funding comes from the federal and state governments and is usually more closely tailored to specific domestic locations and sectors. Both levels often pursue similar funding objectives, but differ considerably in terms of application procedures, deadlines and eligible costs.
